[Abnormal cooling water flow: A factor that is easily overlooked]
Release date:[2025/9/11] Is reading[2]次

Abnormal cooling water flow is also one of the important reasons for the increase in the temperature of the condenser. In a refrigeration system, the function of cooling water is to carry away the heat released by the refrigerant in the condenser. If the flow rate of the cooling water is too small, the condenser cannot fully transfer heat to the cooling water, thereby leading to deterioration of heat exchange.

To check whether the cooling water flow is abnormal, it is first necessary to check whether the cooling water pump is working properly. The water pump is the power source for the circulation of cooling water. If the water pump malfunctions, such as motor damage or impeller wear, it will result in a smaller flow rate of cooling water. When the condenser operates in the laminar flow area, the flow state of the fluid is not conducive to heat transfer, which will further aggravate the deterioration of heat exchange and cause the approaching temperature to increase. Therefore, regular inspection and maintenance of the cooling water pump to ensure its normal operation are crucial for maintaining the normal heat exchange of the refrigeration system.

Abnormal pressure sensor or temperature sensor: The "mislead" of data

Pressure sensors and temperature sensors are important monitoring components in refrigeration systems. They can provide real-time feedback on the pressure and temperature information of the system, offering a basis for technicians' debugging and maintenance. However, when these sensors malfunction, it will lead to inaccurate data displayed by the system, thereby misleading technicians' judgment of the system's status.

If it is suspected that the abnormal display of the condenser near the temperature is caused by an abnormal pressure sensor or temperature sensor, it can be determined by replacing it with other normal pressure or temperature sensors. It is also possible to make a judgment when the unit is in a cold state, observing whether the pressure of the condenser and evaporator is balanced. If the pressure is unbalanced, it indicates that there might be a problem with the sensor and further maintenance or replacement is required.

Excessive refrigerant charging: Counterproductive operation

Refrigerant, also known as snow seed, is a key substance in a refrigeration system that enables the refrigeration cycle. During the installation or maintenance of the refrigeration system, if too much refrigerant is charged, the liquid level of the refrigerant in the condenser will be too high, thereby reducing the effective area of the condenser involved in condensation heat exchange.

At this point, technicians can determine whether the refrigerant has been overcharged by observing the sight glass of the condenser. The sight glass can visually display the state of the refrigerant in the system and the liquid level height. In addition, the degree of subcooling of the condenser can also be combined for judgment. Under normal circumstances, when too much refrigerant is charged, the degree of subcooling at the condenser outlet will be relatively large. This is because too much refrigerant cannot be fully condensed in the condenser, resulting in the refrigerant at the outlet still having a certain degree of subcooling.

Detachment or aging of water chamber spacers: A hidden danger for water-cooled chiller units

For shell and tube condensers in water-cooled chiller units that use two or more passes, there is also a situation where the water chamber spacers fall off or age, causing water to flow through the water chamber. The function of the water chamber spacer is to separate the cooling water into different flow paths, enabling the cooling water to flow along the predetermined path and thereby enhancing the heat exchange efficiency.

When the water chamber spacers fall off or age, the cooling water will short-circuit and flow in the water chamber, causing some of the cooling water to be unable to fully participate in heat exchange, thereby affecting the overall heat exchange performance of the condenser. This situation can be determined by measuring the water resistance of the condenser and comparing it with the nominal water resistance. If the measured water resistance is significantly lower, there is a possibility that the water chamber spacer has fallen off or aged, and it is necessary to carry out timely maintenance or replacement.
